What are tokenized real-world assets?

Tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) are blockchain tokens that represent a claim on, or exposure to, something that exists off-chain: a government bond, a fund share, a property, a listed stock or a commodity.

How tokenization works

An issuer creates a token contract on one or more blockchains. The legal link between the token and the underlying asset is set out in off-chain documents such as a prospectus, fund terms or a trust agreement.

The token itself records ownership and transfers. Depending on its design, it can restrict who may hold it, for example to verified investors in permitted jurisdictions.

Common categories

Tokenized treasuries and money-market funds, tokenized equities and ETFs, private credit, real estate and commodities are among the most common categories. Category definitions vary between data providers.

What to check when researching an RWA

Who the issuer is and where it is regulated; what the token legally represents; which chains it is deployed on and at which contract addresses; who may hold or receive it; and where the information comes from.

UNIALL records each of these as a sourced field. When a source has not been found, the field is shown as undetermined rather than estimated.
